On Tuesday (12/2), the City Council will get a look at the Preliminary Master Plan Update for the proposed Sports Park on SE 95th Way. Some of the major elements in this plan are:
* One natural turf little league field
* Two synthetic multi-purpose fields
* Structures containing restrooms and concessions in 3 locations
* Picnic shelters in 3 locations
* Two playgrounds
* Pathways and viewpoints
* Dog play area

Has the proposed skateboard park been considered for inclusion in this Sports Park? Since its other proposed venues are controversial, and this would group it with other community sports activities in a presumably safe location. That one baseball field off by itself west of parking seems like a good candidate for conversion, or maybe one of the playgrounds (we have lots of those all over Newcastle).
I don’t have any skateboarding/rollerblading/bike tricking kids, but these are popular activities, and perhaps they deserve the same respect and accommodation as group sports, dog enthusiasts, toddlers, and picnickers.

I haven’t heard anyone talk about how Newcastle is going to pay for this fancy new sports park. Can we afford it? In my opinion, I don’t think we can pay for it and this city should NOT be pursuing this project.

I think this sports park is a great idea and we should follow through with it. After all, we need to encourage locals to be outdoors and active. Not only that, it ups the value of the entire neighborhood.

The park looks really nice and I think it’s a great idea. The only thing I wonder about is the dog play area seems pretty small. I assume it’s an off-leash? Would it be possible to put a second, larger, undeveloped dog area at the north end of the park between the trails?

To Dale’s point - the value of the neighborhood is actually higher leaving the existing land undeveloped (based on a study done by a research social scientist at the University of Washington). Why not encourage locals to be outdoors and active by hiking the existing trails through undeveloped forests - an activity that everyone can do. And again - how is this going to be funded? How much more can YOU afford to pay in taxes?
