Steve from the Hazelwood Park neighborhood sent me an email about recent coyote sightings in the Newcastle area. A few weeks ago, a cat belonging to his neighbor disappeared. White tufts of the cat’s hair were later found all over a yard. Then just last week, Steve saw a coyote two doors down from where he lives. It was hanging around some trash barrels and scampered between two houses that back up to the King County Trail in Hazelwood Park. Friday night, a coyote was howling behind his neighbors’ home. Steve wants neighbors to be aware and keep a close eye on their pets.

Our HOA keeps a watch for coyotes - yet each of us should feel compelled to watch out for ouselves, our children and our pets. In attendning training sessions on this issue, I’ve learned that people who leave food out for their cats or dogs typically are a target. Please, everyone, be careful.

I spotted a coyote - last Thursday or Friday running from the new development down SE 80th Street towards the house across the street from me. There is a large wooded area behind the house he ran by. Also, during the summer months we were reviewing our surveillance tape and saw a pack of 4 coyotes running up SE 80th towards 116th. I’ve also spotted them running across the street from Hazelwood Elementary. We have a lot of them in our area.
I also have neighbors that frequently leave their garage doors open and highly encourage them to close it when they’re not outside to monitor what goes in/out of their garage. These are not animals you would like to find caught in your garage!

Coyotes are quite common in this area, regardless of where you live. They frequent the greenbelt behind my Olympus home, and sometimes I can hear a pack howling at night. Sadly, I’ve also had two cats taken by coyotes in the six years I’ve lived here.
Raccoons are also a threat to small pets. While they don’t eat them, a pack of raccoons can easily maul and kill a cat. I’ve seen raccoons in my greenbelt several times.

Yes, I’ve had at least 3 cats taken by wildlife here - they were young cats, between 2-4 years old. Now all of my future cats have been indoor only and when I let my chihuahua out for the bathroom I always watch her - you never know what will be there to grab your animal that’s under 10 pounds when you’re not looking.
